Poor and Distressed
Following 'Domestic problems' a Freemason (we will name him Patrick) from the Irish Constitution, abandoned his Cork home for destinations unknown. Concerned about his welfare the Secretary of his Mother Lodge in Cork endeavoured to track his whereabouts, persistent enquiries indicated that he was in England possibly in the Preston area of Lancashire staying in a Carmelite Home. The Secretary made contact with the Preston Masonic Hall and the Local Care Officer became involved. The LCO immediately made contact with the said Carmelite home, where he found a Priest who had befriended Patrick many years ago, and had recently met with him again and provided Patrick with shelter within the Carmelite home, and later assisted him in finding other accommodation, albeit a single room in another area of the City. Armed with this information the LCO made to meet up with Patrick but to his disappointment was unable to make immediate contact, returning later to eventually secure the Irishman's attention. Patrick, at this time being in a state that could only be described as a distressed and destitute mason. Urgent assistance was required and the LCO was there to help.
Over the next few weeks the LCO made regular visits and arranged for him to visit the local Social Service and Employment offices to seek work in the area, however due to the peculiarities of Patrick's profession there was limited scope in the area and it was suggested he contact the employment agencies in Manchester or London. During this period the LCO had communicated back to the Lodge Secretary and kept him updated with the situation. An arrangement was made between the two of them to transfer money from Patrick's Lodge in Ireland to the LCO for onward presentation to the distressed Patrick. This was achieved by the use of the Group Disbursement Account and ultimately monies were handed over. Further monies were transferred to the account from the Munster Province of Ireland again being handed over to Patrick as requested.
Following several meetings and job searches with the LCO and in receipt of the monies from Munster, Patrick decided he would purchase a flight ticket from Liverpool and return to Cork. Again communication between LCO and Lodge Secretary resulted in the Secretary boarding a plane from Liverpool to Cork and accompanying Patrick back to his homeland.
Upon his arrival his Lodge Almoner took over and ensured that he was in receipt of any entitled benefits from the Irish Social Services system, and was dealing with his personal requirements.
This episode, with names being changed for obvious reasons, demonstrates that Freemasonry is Universal and through diligent persistence and team work results such as the aforementioned can be achieved - Credit to all concerned.

Preston Group Carol Service 2007
There was a change of venue for the 2007 Annual Family Carol Service, which was held this year at Broughton Parish Church. As in previous years, we were delighted to have the pleasure of the company of W. Bro. Bill Seddon, Assistant Provincial Grand Master and his wife Christine.
The service followed the successful format of previous years, allowing plenty of opportunity for the packed congregation to join in singing their favourite carols, along with excellent contributions from the Choir, and the Old Hall Brass Ensemble were with us to enhance the programme, which was planned by W. Bro. Ian Cuerden.
The Vicar of Broughton Parish Church, Revd Sidney Fox welcomed everyone to the Church, and led the Service. At the end of a splendid afternoon the Preston Group Chairman, W Bro. Ian Greenwood, thanked the vicar and church authorities for their welcome and co-operation, and the organisers for arranging and planning such a memorable introduction to this year’s festive season. After the Service refreshments were served for the last time by the 2000 / 2001 Masters and their Ladies in the new Church Hall, during which we enjoyed an excellent demonstration of bell ringing.

Another Theme Night Success - Greek Night
The latest themed evening from the Refurbishment Fund was, judging by the comments of our revellers (in Mediterranean dress), another great success. Again, thanks to Graham and the domestic staff at Ashlar House, the dining room looked really inviting decked out for our traditional Greek Night.
After a free shot of Ouzo everyone settled down to the meal. Chef Alistair provided a feast of Greek food, including numerous Meze items to start – Olives, Hummous, Taramasalata, Tzatziki, Whitebait, Halloumi, Feta cheese Salad, Stuffed Vine Leaves and Greek Sousoukakia (spicy sausage), main courses of Moussaka, Pastitso and Souvlakia, and sweets of Banana cake and Greek Fruit Salad, Yogurt and Honey. Steward Graham and the Bar staff kept everyone well supplied with the necessary lubrication, and the evening closed with our somewhat disorganised attempt at Marcello Minerbi’s version of ‘Zorba’s Dance’.
Our thanks go to W.Bro. Russ Howarth for organising the night, and to Bro. George Vakalopoulos for his invaluable assistance in making the function as authentic as possible.

Freemasons Provide £55,000 ambulance for red cross
Freemasons have again showed their generosity by providing a £55,000 fully equipped emergency ambulance to the North West Area of the British Red Cross.
The donation to the North West Emergency Response Appeal by The Grand Charity will strengthen the ability of the Red Cross to respond to major incidents in support of the emergency services and is part of their £2.3 million appeal designed to build up community resilience across the North West to disasters such as the floods which affected parts of the country earlier this year.
The presentation of the keys to the ambulance by David McCormick Assistant Provincial Grand Master, the Freemasons’ Grand Charity Representative for West Lancashire, to Edith Conn, Area President of the British Red Cross took place before an audience of invited guests including William R. Seddon, Assistant Provincial Grand Master for the Preston area and Jack Price, Past Assistant Provincial Grand Master, representing East Lancashire Freemasons.
A sign on the side of the ambulance says: “Kindly donated by the Freemasons’ Grand Charity”.
Several civic leaders including the Deputy Mayor of Preston, the Mayors of Ribble Valley, Lancaster and the Mayor of Fylde were also present for the ceremony at Preston North End’s Deepdale Stadium.
David McCormick said: “The Freemasons Grand Charity supports people in need and has a history of providing assistance to the worldwide emergency relief effort of the British Red Cross. This was an opportunity to extend that support and we are delighted to be associated with the services that this vehicle will provide for the people of the North West.”

Scary but Fun – Hallowe’en
On the 27th of October the PMH Refurbishment Fund ran their Hallowe’en Party at Ashlar House. Organised by Russ Howarth, attendance was excellent with most people opting for fancy dress, which added to the fun.
The Ballroom looked fabulous, thanks to the sterling efforts of the domestic staff at Ashlar House. A great buffet from Chef Alistair, with excellent service from our Steward Graham and his staff, meant a memorable night for our revellers, who danced the night away to top entertainer Johnny Pearson. Our thanks go to W.Bro. David Winder, our Group Secretary, who did an excellent job as Master of Ceremonies.
Don’t forget our open events at the beginning of next year – Race Night on the 2nd of February 2008, and our ‘Black Tie’ Spring Ball with live band The Fabulous All-Stars on the 26th of April.

A New Chair for Jack
Jack Milner is a bright 14-year old.
He has a great family - his mother works for BAe Systems, his dad is a communications engineer, and he has a sister Jennifer – their relationship at times is the normal sister–brother thing, but you can see they get along very well together. They are a great family and an inspiration to many as to how families should be.
Jack attends Penwortham Priory Sports and Technology College, and his favourite subject is technology. At the moment, when he leaves formal education he wants to go into graphic design, and he has the capability judging by his performance so far. He’s not much bothered about sport, but he enjoys the company of a group of good friends, and he likes to go fishing now and again.
Jack Milner has a problem, though. He suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which means that he needs a wheelchair to get around. Some time ago it became apparent that he needed a new chair as he was rapidly outgrowing the one he had, and his parents John and Pam set about the process of evaluating what Jack needed. Their research identified the ideal vehicle for Jack.
That vehicle was the ‘Quantum 600’ – the cost, including vital special seating so that Jack could stretch out whilst in the chair, was £9,385. This was a substantial amount of cash, but being the people they are, Jack’s parents launched an appeal to raise the necessary funds. The fund had raised part of the finance, but it was clear that it would be some time before the final cost was realised.
Enter the Freemasons in the form of the Almoner of the Lodge of Good Fellowship No5901 in Preston. Jack’s grandfather has been a member of the Lodge for many years, but he had become ill and was in hospital, so the Almoner had gone to visit him. At the bedside the Almoner got into a conversation with the grandfather’s daughter, Jack’s mum, and discovered that she had a son who needed a new wheelchair.
It was logical that the Freemasons provide assistance if possible. The Almoner explored several channels but was initially unable to source the necessary funding. However, being persistent, and working along with his contacts within Freemasonry, his persistence eventually paid off when he contacted the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Trust who, to his delight, were able to provide the full balance of the cost of the chair for Jack. In the way people his age do with technology, Jack soon familiarised himself with the chair, and now he’s fully mobile in it, the chair has an added advantage for Jack because it can be adjusted into almost any position, and since Jack can’t move around that’s important to avoid pressure on any sensitive areas.
Jack’s change of chair will have a knock-on effect for a little girl in Tanzania. He’s sending the chair he has grown out of to her to replace her current transport – a white plastic garden chair with added wheels!
The Milners’ search hasn’t ended though – Jack’s transport is a very complex machine and although his folks are competent enough to see what needs to be done; it will need some expensive specialist maintenance in the future. The Lodge of Good Fellowship has undertaken to review Jack’s needs with a view to possibly providing further financial assistance in the future.
So the search for finance goes on, but whatever life holds for Jack, he will know that he couldn’t be part of a better family than the Milners.

An encouraging night at Preston Lodge of Sincerity
Following the Installation meeting of the Preston Lodge of Sincerity No 8085 which had taken place in October, the newly Installed Worshipful Master, W.Bro. David Barlow, P.Pr.G.Supt.Wks (Durham), wasted absolutely no time in placing his new team of Officers to the test by requesting their assistance in Initiating Mr. Michael Brownlee at their regular November Lodge meeting. They did not disappoint and assisted their Worshipful Master in delivering an excellent ceremony. The pressure of the evening had been heightened even further by the presence of the Group Chairman, W.Bro. Ian Greenwood, P.A.G.D.C., and the Group Secretary, W.Bro. David Winder, P.Pr.G.Stwd who had attended to lend their support.
What was doubly encouraging was the attendance of two other entered apprentices, themselves only recently Initiated and who had attended to make a further advancement in their own Masonic knowledge and indeed to further support a fellow newly initiated brother.
The meeting proved to be a great success and can only be an encouragement to Freemasonry as a whole and the Preston Lodge of Sincerity in particular. Although a small Lodge in terms of numbers, Preston Lodge of Sincerity is a Lodge which is looking forward to a bright future, and Lodge members take their ritual seriously a point amply demonstrated by the excellent First Degree ceremony they performed on that night. In fact notice of motion was given for another candidate for initiation, very well done to all concerned!
An Initiation is always an encouraging event and produces a vibrancy within the Lodge and within its members individually, this was clear for all to see. The Initiation of Bro. Mike Brownlee was made even more interesting by those two especially important visitors – Entered Apprentices Bro. Nicholas Colosimo from Ingol Lodge of St. Margaret No 8544 and Bro. George Vakalopoulos, a member of Ribble Lodge No 4558, in fact, Bro. Curt Ingleson of Preston Guild Lodge No. 4408 was also due to attend but a work commitment prevented hoim from doing so. For all who attended it was great to meet three young Freemasons who are looking forward to their respective futures in Masonry.

Josiah Maddocks Celebrates 50 years in Royal Arch Masonry
On Wednesday 3rd October 2007 Josiah Maddocks, celebrated 50 years in Royal Arch Masonry at his home in Goosnargh.
At the presentation were E. Comp. E. Casson ,Past Assistant to the Grand Superintendent, E. Comp. I. Greenwood, Group Chairman, E.Comp J. Gregson Scribe E, Preston Guild Chapter No 4408, and E. Comp. D. J. Winder. Josiah had requested that E. Comp. Casson present the certificate as he had been the Assistant to the Grand Superintendent during his active period as a Royal Arch Mason. Permission for this had been granted by E.Comp.Stanley Oldfield, Assistant to the Provincial Grand Principals.
Born on the12th of June 1913, Josiah attended primary school at Bootle. At the age of 9 years medical problems requiring surgery resulted in him spending 5 years in Heswall Sanatorium. Josiah returned to Secondary education at the age of 14 years and attended Bootle Polytechnic.
At the age of 15 and a half Josiah went to sea initially as a bell boy and then a ships steward.
In 1939 he joined the R.A.M.C and served in Africa, Northumberland and latterly York Military Hospital attaining the rank of Sergeant Major. It was at this time that he met Ann who he later married on the 22nd of February 1941.
After his service in the Army he joined the Health Service in 1946, staying there all his working life working in the Preston, Chorley and Wrightington Health Service Areas.
He retired in 1973 as Area Supplies Officer.
Josiah was initiated into Ribbleton Lodge No 6184 on the 21st of November 1960, serving as Worshipful Master in 1969. He has been an honorary member since Sept 1999, celebrating 50 years in the Craft at his home address in 2003.
Exalted in to Royal Preston Chapter No 333 on 3rd October 1957, Josiah served as Zerubbabel in 1972. He is also a member of Preston Guild Chapter No. 4408.
Josiah and Ann have two sons - David, who works in the National Health Service, and Richard who is well known to Preston Freemasons in both the Craft and Royal Arch.

Finishing the roof – The Rene Sladen Centre for Guiding
The Rene Sladen Centre for Guiding in Penwortham, Preston had a problem.
The Centre, a former army hut, cost £210 delivered in 1964 – just about clearing the bank balance of 4th Penwortham Guides at the time. It was erected by Parents and Guides on a plot between Cheamere Drive and Clovelly Avenue, Penwortham. By May 1965 the Guides were holding meetings there, and the Brownies moved their meetings to the hut in the Summer of ‘65. The last job, to complete the work, was to line and paint the roof of the main room, completed in early 1967.
Unfortunately, time and the weather took their toll, and eventually the roof needed replacement, so an appeal was launched to generate funds for the work. The appeal realised some funds, but there was still a shortfall, and this was where Freemasonry was able to step in. The Community Fund of West Lancashire was able to give a donation of £1200, the balance of the cost of completing the re-roofing.
Although the building is the Centre for 4th Penwortham Guides and Brownies, the hut is made available to other community groups for a nominal charge.

Wrea Green Church and Community Facility
It has previously been reported that our Asst Provincial Grand Master, W Bro William Seddon, had been pleased in November 2005, to hand over a cheque in the sum of £1000-00 to Mr John Rawcliffe, the Church Treasurer, of St Nicholas Church, Wrea Green.
On behalf of the Community Fund of West Lancashire Freemasons. The donation was to assist in the funding a West wing annexe to the church, which when completed, would become a Community Facility. Used not only by the residents of the Village but also the Police and the Citizen’s Advice Bureau; thus providing the residents of Wrea Green with a much needed communal facility.
On Saturday July 21st 2007 The Preston Group Vice-Chairman, W Bro Stan Rigby, along with Mrs. Rigby, were the invited guests of the Church and able to attend the Dedication Service, followed by the Official opening of the Community Facility, by Mrs. Barbara McLean, a Parishioner who had achieved the honour by way of a local lottery.
During the Service the Vicar the Rev. J. Wixon was able to thank the many bodies and individuals who had made generous donations towards the project. He made specific comment regarding the Freemason's of West Lancashire's donation which had contributed towards the re-locating of a stained glass window, previously donated by the Preston & Fylde Freemasons in 1891, to the memory of the Right Honorable Henry Herbert, 4th Earl of Caernarfon, a Past Pro Grand Master.
This window now features prominently in the new West wing of the Community Facility and is prominently marked as to it provenance.
The Chairman of Wrea Green Parish Council and Parishioner W Bro Jack Dobson, a Past Master of the Lodge of Endeavour, extended the most courteous of welcomes to the Vice Chairman and Mrs Rigby escorting them around the new building. The whole project has been constructed to the highest standards of workmanship by all trades, the majority of which being local tradesmen. W Bro Rigby recommends that, should you be in the area that viewing, by arrangement with W Bro Jack Dobson, should be taken.

Rosemere Cheque
Rosemere Cancer Foundation has received a welcome addition to their funds in the form of a cheque from Preston Freemasons.
The cheque for £500 was donated by local Freemasons belonging to Ingol Lodge of St Margaret. The money was raised by organising social events during the year which were supported by masons and non masons.
This is in addition to £500 already donated in March of this year by The Preston Masters 2006, which is a collaboration of a number of Preston Lodges formed every year to work together to raise money for local charities and other worthy causes. Again the money was raised by organising raffles, a quiz night, a sponsored walk and a duck race.
Rosemere serves Lancs & South Cumbria, the majority of people receiving treatment live within a 20 mile car journey of the centre. It is one of the most advanced centres in the country. Heavily involved in research as well as the treatment of cancer – one project they are currently involved in is work in conjunction with Lancaster University to identifying triggers for prostate cancer.
The Foundation has recently launched a “Ray of Hope” appeal to raise £650,000 for the purchase of the latest image-guided radiotherapy equipment which will be an addition to the Linear Accelerator shown in our picture. The technology will allow the targeting of cancers which are actually moving, therefore treating only the cancer itself and therefore causing much less distress to anyone undergoing treatment.

Roaring 60s – Another Success!
The Roaring ‘60s night on the 2nd of June was another successful event organised by the Refurbishment Fund and run by Preston Masters. Fancy dress was optional but seemed to be the order of the day, everyone being keen to slip back in time for an evening.
The event again featured live entertainment, this time in the form of the supremely accomplished ‘New Beat’, who played many favourites and kept the dancefloor and bar busy for the night. During the interval Chef Alistair and his team also provided nostalgia in the form of Scampi & Chips – a favourite 60s bar snack!
Everyone had a great time on the night and thanks go to Russ Howarth for organisation, Sharon Bowman for the room decoration, and last but not least to Ken White, Chairman of Preston Masters, once again our MC for the event.

Joan’s Special Day
The annual trip of Preston Freemasons and their Ladies to the continent was especially significant for Mrs. Joan Wood, wife of W.Bro. Brian Wood. She was to meet, for the first time, Marie-Jose Ongena Vancleemput - her pen friend of 53 years!
This year’s trip, again organised by W.Bro. Melvyn Cross, took the intrepid travellers to Antwerp which allowed Joan and Brian to Make arrangements to meet Marie-Jose and her husband Michael.
In 1954, shortly after Joan left school and started work, a colleague came into the office and said that she had a Belgian pen-friend whose sister would like to communicate with someone in England, Joan took up the offer, and the friendship was born. Joan and Marie-Jose wrote a letter to each other every three months initially, and during the last two years have moved into the 21st Century, communicating by email. From a chance start as pen friends some interesting facts emerged - Joan’s birthday is one day before Marie-Jose’s; Marie-Jose and Michael married in the same year as Joan and Brian; both couples had two children, a boy and a girl, who married at similar times.
Joan and Marie-Jose nearly met in 1958 but at the time a visa was required for travel and Joan’s visa didn’t arrive in time. This time it did happen.
Joan said : “when she walked through the door of the Hotel I knew immediately it was her, and it was as if we’d known each other forever!”
Joan presented Marie-Jose with a gift, and Marie-Jose and Michael took Joan and Brian on a memorable day in Antwerp taking in the Rubens Museum, the Cathedral and some excellent food. After returning to the Hotel for a short rest and then Joan and Brian Walked their Belgian Friends across the Square to the station and waved goodbye.

Preston Fellowship - A Memorable day Out
On Thursday 19th April 2007 a coach party of 43 Fellowship members and friends set off on a rather dull morning along the M6 in the direction of North Wales.
After a 'comfort stop' at Chester Services we carried on to the outskirts of Chirk where we picked up Emma, our guide for the day, together with the arrival of the sun. We then took a short drive to the Marina at the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct on the Llangollen Canal and boarded a narrow boat owned by 'Jones the Boat' and were served coffee and biscuits as we sailed across the aqueduct and back.
The nearby village of Froncysyllte is the home of the now famous Fron Male Voice Choir but unfortunately they were not there to serenade us.
After boarding our coach again, we made our way through Chirk to The Lord Moreton Public House for a delightful cavery lunch.
After lunch our guide took us on a tour of the Cerriog Valley with it's many little villages and very twisty roads which our coach driver took it all in his stride. The last stop on our day out was to the Moreton Garden Centre where we had time to partake of refreshments if so desired or to indulge in a 'spending spree' whatever took your fancy.
Our return to Preston was made with no problems whatsoever and we look forward to our next day out.

Mel Johnson’s Bowling Year 2006
W. Bro. Mel Johnson P.Pr.J.G.W., a well known member of the Lodge of Ingol St. Margaret and mainstay of Masonic bowling in the Preston Group, has reason to be proud. Last season he won two coveted trophies – The Preston Group 2006 Trophy, and the Cyril McGibbon Trophy in the West Lancs tournament which is awarded to the winner of a supplementary competition for bowlers losing their first round match.
If two Masonic Trophies didn’t seem enough he was also winner of trophies in the Veterans’ singles and doubles at Broughton Club.
Mel’s father Harry was a well known name amongst bowlers in Preston, and Mel began his bowling “career” at the tender age of 12, one of the youngest players in the League at the time. A retired police officer and former butcher, he plays for five league teams through the summer, and bowls indoors in Blackpool during the winter. He is Secretary of the Preston Group Bowling Committee, and a tireless worker towards the expansion of the sport among Preston Freemasons.
The 2007 Preston Group event will be held this year on the 6th of May at Ashton-on-Ribble Bowling Club, Egerton Road, Preston, And the West Lancs Tournament will be held under the auspices of the Southport Group at Tarleton Bowling Club on the 7th of July.

Valentines Ball a resounding success
What a night! The Valentines Ball on the 17th of February 2007 at Ashlar House was a great start to what will be regular seasonal functions at the venue.
Organised by the Refurbishment Fund Committee and hosted by Preston Masters, the event was a sell-out and featured live entertainment from top North West Showband “The Accused”. After a buffet meal the nine-piece band played two sets of dance hits which made it difficult to find space on the dancefloor!

Family Freemasonry
William James Brennand has just completed an extraordinary few months in Freemasonry, culminating in him being installed into the Chair of King Solomon in The Lodge of Unanimity 113 on the 4th of January 2007, having previously been Worshipful Master of The Halcyon Lodge No. 6500 in 1978-79.
Jim’s is a great story of family Freemasonry. He brought his Brother-in-Law W.Bro. J. Edwin Ryding into the Lodge of Unanimity as a Joining Member. He initiated his son Duncan on the 3rd of October 2005.
In this current Masonic season things really came together for Jim. His son Duncan was raised by the Past Masters on the 6th of November 2006, Jim being Senior Warden and his Brother-in-Law (Duncan’s uncle) being Senior Deacon. On the 4th of December Jim was invited to take the Chair and initiated his second son David, withDavid’s Uncle being Junior Deacon.
The culmination of these events was at the Installation on the 4th of January 2007 at which the Secretary was the Installing Master Jim’s son Duncan presented his father to the Worshipful Master for Installation (this must be unusual in itself – a son presenting his father!)
On returning to the Lodge Following the Installation of his father, Duncan presented the 3rd Degree Tools.
Later he was appointed and invested by his father as Junior Deacon, with his uncle Edwin as Senior Deacon, brother David being invested as a Steward.
The Stewards were addressed by W.Bro. Edwin Ryding
At the Festive Board the Worshipful Master's sons Duncan and David sang the Masters song as a duet giving an excellent rendition, and a fine end to the current flurry of Masonic activity in Jim’s family.

Preston Masonic Fellowship - Christmas Get Together
On Thursday 7th December 2006 some 57 members of the Fellowship attended the Annual Christmas Lunch at Ashlar House, Preston.
The principal guest of honour was W. Bro. W. R. Seddon Asst.PGM and his wife Christine. The dining room was decorated to a very high Christmas standard and an excellent meal was served.
Many members had contributed raffle prizes and this had to be run in between courses, by the secretary Ray Beech and his wife Barbara.
After the raffle had taken place, the chairman Fred Parker played a selection of Carols which was greatly appreciated by the members. He then wished all a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous and Happy New Year.
The first meeting in 2007 will take place on Thursday 11th January at 1-45pm

A Gift to a New Church
After the complete rebuild and recent re-opening of Bamber Bridge Methodist Church near Preston, West Lancashire Freemasons were very pleased to be able to provide the Church with an electric piano for use in their services. A cheque for £1189 from the Community Fund of West Lancashire Freemasons was presented to the Church Treasurer David Evans on Thursday the 16th of November by W. Bro. W. R. Seddon P.S.G.D., Asst. Pr.G.M. and Preston Group Chairman W. Bro. I. W. Greenwood P.A.G.D.C., accompanied by W. Bro. D. A. Thompson P.Pr.J.G.W., Local Care Officer for the Preston Group and W. Bro. G. Woods MBE JP, P.Pr.S.G.W., church member and Chairman of Preston Masonic Hall.
The old Church was demolished 18 months ago and the new multi-purpose Church building, along with Cuerden Church School, built on the site providing a thriving worship and social centre for the community.

A boost to Maplewood’s Future
On the 21st of September Maplewood House in Bamber Bridge near Preston received a cash boost from The Freemasons in the form of a cheque for £750 from Preston Masters’ group 2005-2006. For some time Maplewood had been under threat of closure, but the threat has now been lifted and so Maplewood is once again seeking funding, and the Preston Masters’ cheque was a welcome addition to the funds.

Richard Arton Celebrates 50 Years in Freemasonry
W. Bro. Richard Arton celebrated 50 Years in Freemasonry at the meeting of the Lodge of Good Fellowship No. 5901 on the 15th of September 2006. At the Lodge Meeting W.Bro. W.R. Seddon, Asst. Pr.G.M. took the Chair, speaking of Richard’s Masonic and public life, and Richard’s health was toasted at the Celebration Banquet by W.Bro. R. Birkbeck
Richard Arton was born in Preston in 1921, attending St. Matthews School. A clue to his future came at the age of 12 when the Mayor of Preston visited the school, saw Richard’s sketches on display, and asked to meet the talented artist. Richard left school at 14 and worked for Hardiker Poster Writers, creating posters for cinemas across the North of England. His next move was to a company well known to Freemasons – Stephen Simpson’s – where he drew intricate stencils which were made up into the heraldic crests. Special commissions included the Preston coat of arms for an evening bag presented to HRH Queen Elizabeth on her visit to the town in 1938; design of the lettering and heraldic crests on the Wedding Cake of HRH Elizabeth II and Prince Philip; refurbishment of the Royal Order Garters belonging to the Queen and Winston Churchill, and the design and completion of the apron for Alan Fletcher Ferris the Provincial Grand Master.
During the War Richard enlisted in the Army Medical Corps and trained as an Operating Theatre Assistant. He was stationed in Field Hospitals in Arramanche, Bayeux and Bruche and was in Nuremberg when VE day arrived. Returning to the UK he volunteered as a Medical Commando and gained the Green Beret. After the War Richard returned to manage the Masonic Regalia department at Stephen Simpson’s until his retirement in 1985.
Richard was initiated into the Lodge of Good Fellowship on the 15th of September 1956, became Master in April 1972 and served as ADC from 1976 to 1979, the year in which he was appointed Acting Provincial Grand Steward. He then served as DC in the Lodge from 1979 to 1984, at which time he was promoted to P.Pr.G.Supt of Works. He is also a member of Setantia Lodge of Installed Masters.

Leslie Howarth Celebrates 60 Years in Freemasonry

At the meeting of Ribbleton Lodge No. 6386 on the 22nd of May 2006 W. Bro. Leslie Howarth celebrated 60 Years in Freemasonry. W.Bro. W.R. Seddon P.S.G.D. Asst. Pr.G.M. took the Chair in Lodge, and spoke of Leslie’s Masonic and public careers, and at the Celebration Banquet Leslie’s Health was toasted by W.Bro. W.S. Huck, P.S.G.D., P. Asst.Pr.G.M.
Born in Penwortham on the 6th of February 1914, Leslie was educated at the local Elementary School, moving on to Hutton Grammar School. He started work in January 1931, becoming qualified in the Chartered Auctioneers and Estate Agents and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors – he eventually served as Secretary of the Preston Branch of the R.I.C.S. from 1956 to 1960. During the War Leslie saw service in the Middle East, Sicily, France, Holland and Germany, being discharged in 1946. He was mentioned in dispatches for Distinguished Service. Returning to work Leslie became a Partner in May 1946, and married his wife Kathleen Elizabeth Walton in 1947. They had two sons.
Leslie’s public and Masonic careers contain an incredible list of commitments over the years – Secrertary of Preston Chamber of Trade, Preston Rotary Club Secretary and President; Treasurer then Chairman of Preston Spastics Group, Magistrate, Hutton Grammar School Governor, and founder of Preston Luncheon Club. In July 1979 he was invited to Buckingham Palace Garden Party.
Leslie was initiated into Priory Lodge No. 6027 in June 1946, becoming Master in 1956. He was a founder of Lodge of Endeavour No. 7036, Old Huttonian Lodge No. 7614 (in which he became Master in 1975) and Phoenix Lodge No. 9206. He served as Secretary in Priory Lodge from 1958 to 1968. He was exalted into Penwortham Chapter No. 5874 in 1970 and served as Treasurer from 1975 to 1999, and Advanced to Progress Lodge of Mark Master Masons No.898 in 1960 becoming WM in 1972. Leslie holds the Ranks of P.Pr.S.G.W. in the Craft, P.Pr.A.G.D.C. In the H.R.A. and P.Pr.S.G.W. in Mark.
Leslie’s Celebration was held at the regular Meeting of Ribbleton Lodge No. 6386, Priory Lodge having amalgamated with Ribbleton.

Preston Master Duck Race
Brethren, the duck race went ahead despite the weather not really being too nice....
I would like to thank Brothers Bob Norris, Andy Donnelly, and Alan Eastham for turning up to help out.
A special thanks to Brother Andy Donnelly from us all - as with out the loan of his waders we could not have got all the Ducks in. Another thanks goes to James 15 (not a Mason but helped out fantastically) who had one of the pairs of waders on and collected lots of the ducks along the river, also his Father who was able to lend us some large nets to collect the ducks. To two past masters W Bro's McGill and O'Hagan who were with us to watch (they were both dressed too well to throw in to get ducks) and also the wives of some of the Brethren who joined us just to stand by the river and get wet in the rain ......
A special thank you to Russ and Marge, as with out their help the Duck Race would have been a non starter (it would probably have been held in my bathroom). I only hope we have not disorganised your home too much.
We set off 300 Ducks and the eventual winner was a ticket sold by Garry Woods. 2nd and 3rd places were sold by Andy Donnelly.
I remembered to take a Digital camera with me and have attached some of the pictures .... they are the release, the journey, James (up to his knees) and Andy (up to his chest) they both look so happy to be in the river ...... I know it was cold in there as I released them and had to wade in to throw them into the river flow .....

Preston Masters 2005-2006 - Sponsored Walk
The above event was successfully completed by 17 people, and I have attached a couple of pictures.
We started a little after 10:25 on Sunday 11th of June at Beacon Fell visitor's centre and 8 of us set off on the longer grassed walk
- this is the picture of the people with the boots! Included in the picture were 6 current masters and an IPM, from left to right, Peter Fountain, Peter Nicholson, Owen Jones, Keith Ackers, Barry Lodge, Gary Woods and Simon Hore (the IPM).
Of the 9 walkers who did the tarmac walk, there were 3 Preston Master from left to right Sean Doyle, Andy Donnelly and Mike Armstrong. Not captured by the camera was the final Preston Master of the day, Alan Eastham with his wife who both completed both walks! The third picture captures the booted 8 just before the last assent, taking a well earned rest for the camera!
We will update this brief report with the total of the sum raised in sponsorship and now take this opportunity to thank all those who sponsored us. Many thanks also to the rest of the folks who tuned out to walk with us which helped to make this event a most enjoyable day - and the weather was kind by being not too hot and with a gentle breeze most of the time!

Preston Group Masonic Bowling Competition
Sunday 7th May 2006
The Preston Group Masonic Bowls Tournament took place at Ashton Bowling Club on Sunday the 7th of May with 18 bowlers taking part. It was nice to see some different faces and also a good number of supporters. The weather remained fine despite the threat of rain. The bowlers were split into four groups and played on a round robin basis with the top player in each group qualifying for the semi finals. The successful players from the groups were Malcolm Cooley, Norman Coulthurst, Mel Johnson and John Medcalf, The losing semi-finalists were Malcolm Cooley and Norman Coulthurst. The final was contested by Mel Johnson and John Medcalf.
It was nice to see John Medcalf in the semi-final as this was the first time he had entered the tournament. He played well all day but was defeated in the final by Mel Johnson who was unbeaten in all his games. The cup, together with the President’s prize was presented to Mel by the President Gordon Payne. John received the Chairman’s Prize.
The four qualifiers will now represent Preston Group at the Provincial Finals to be held at Prescot on the 1st of July.
The venue was ideal for the competition and the green was in good order. Brenda the club steward once again provided the refreshments for lunch which were enjoyed by all.
A player profile has been drawn up and hopefully more can be added so that more will be aware of the Competition next year. Those with Email addresses will assist with communications.
