Now that the new masonic season has commenced, I can look back on quite a busy summer recess.
In addition to the preparation of the nominations for appointments and promotions in Provincial Grand Lodge and Chapter in 2006, a number of cheque presentations have been made from The Community Fund of West Lancashire Freemasons, together the proceeds from the Alf Short Walk.
Full details of these presentations can be found elsewhere on the Preston Group website. However my lasting impression is how much the recipients appreciated the donations. The only regret is that we do not receive the publicity in the local press, however by means of our website, at least our members are aware of how their charity efforts are being appreciated.
From the Preston Group Charity account, we were able to purchase a combined TV/DVD and to present this to a Fylde teenager, Alcardo Gardner, who is suffering a life threatening medical illness, which has yet to be fully diagnosed. The case was first drawn to my attention by a masonic colleague in the Province of East Lancashire, who explained the situation and advised me of the request from Alcardo’s parents for any help that may be available to provide items of comfort for Alcardo. His own particular Lodge had raised a significant amount to provide assistance. Our donation of the TV was gratefully received. I was also able to pass on the request for assistance to my colleague Group Chairman of the South Fylde Group, who arranged for a computer and a Game Boy to be given to Alcardo. This is an example of how Freemasonry can work to provide support to deserving cases when required.
During the summer recess a tremendous amount of work has been carried out at Saul Street by W Bro David Rhodes, the newly appointed Librarian and Museum Curator. Room 2 is now the composite Library and Museum, and W.Bro.Rhodes has spent a considerable amount of time in reorganising and labelling the many fine exhibits in the Museum. This Museum will provide pleasure for many of our members and visitors and for this I must record my sincere thanks to David for the time and expertise he has provided. I would also encourage members to make use of the extensive Library that is available.
The new masonic season started with two Golden Jubilee celebrations. W.Bro.Jim Treasure in Royal Preston Lodge No.333 and W.Bro.Bob Howarth in Preston Portcullis Lodge No.6316. On both occasions W.Bro.Bill Seddon our Assistant Provincial Grand Master chaired the celebration ceremony. During the current season there will be several more of these celebrations.
Following the changes in ritual in the Holy Royal Arch, we were able to welcome the Fylde Masonic Demonstration Team into the Group to carry out a splendid explanation and demonstration of the mandatory and optional changes in the ritual. The event was well attended by many representatives from the Chapters in the Group.
I would at this time make early reference to the Group Carol Service, that will this year be held at Christ Church, Fulwood on Sunday 11th December. The format of the service will change from previous services, and there will be more participation by the congregation in the singing of the popular Carols. I look forward to a full Church for what I am sure will be a splendid occasion.
Please continue to enjoy your Freemasonry
