As the current Masonic season is about to conclude, I must take this opportunity to place on record my grateful thanks for the welcome, and on many occasions, the most generous hospitality I have received from the Lodges and Chapters in the Preston Group during the past season. I have attempted to visit each Lodge and Chapter during the season. I have achieved this in the case of Chapters but have missed visiting four Lodges. I have found practically all Chapters and Lodges to be in good heart, some despite having a small membership. Several Lodges have readily accepted the concept of Amalgamation and we have experienced a number of splendid Amalgamation ceremonies following their confirmation of Amalgamation by United Grand Lodge. The Chapters in the Group have had a successful season with several exaltations taking place. I trust that this success continues and hope that the recently announced changes in the ritual, when adopted, will make future ceremonies more enjoyable. It is worth advising at this point that we will be holding a demonstration of the changes, both optional and mandatory, at a special workshop that is being held on 12th September 2005 at Saul Street. All are welcome to attend this workshop, however individual invitations will be sent to Chapter D.C’s in August.
No doubt all members will be concerned about the recently announced increases in Grand Lodge dues and charity donations. These coupled with the significant increases in per capita dues for Preston Masonic Hall Ltd, will not be popular with members, however I would specifically request all members in the Preston Group to stay loyal to the fraternity and not to take any hasty action and resign their membership.
On the 23rd May, Provincial Grand Lodge was held at Blackpool. Many Brethren from the Group received their appointment in Provincial Rank. It was pleasing to see that all but one of the Brethren who were to be appointed did attend the investiture. It was also a tremendous delight for me to see W.Bro.Ted Cowperthwaite receiving promotion to the very special Rank of P.Pr.S.G.W. Ted has recently spent a significant time in hospital undergoing tests and treatment for problems with his back. Those who know Ted will be aware how determined he is to overcome his difficulties, which was further exemplified by his decision to be invested recently as the First Principal of his Chapter. If there was an example for us all to emulate it is certainly Ted Cowperthwaite and I wish him a speedy recovery and many years to enjoy his very special Provincial Rank.
I trust that everyone has an enjoyable summer break and that during the next season you continue to enjoy your Freemasonry.
